Helping in the Kitchen

licking the mashed potatoes

Sadie still loves to help in the kitchen, especially if we get to use the mixer and even more especially if I'm making mashed potatoes, which she calls "hot potatoes!" If I ask her if she wants to help, she immediately goes to get a chair to stand on. We made the potatoes on Sunday to go along with meatloaf and I made a big batch so Sadie could have some for her lunches this week.

Speaking of lunches, I could use some fresh ideas for Sadie's lunch box. She doesn't seem bored or unhappy with her lunches, but I'm starting to get bored. I feel like I pack the same things over and over.

What a cutie! The girls love to help in the kitchen, too.

Glad Sadie loves her toddler bed. She looks very cozy.

Madeline's my little kitchen helper, too. I get frustrated sometimes when I don't have the time to supervise her culinary efforts and would rather that she not help! She loves helping make quesadillas, scrambled eggs, and smoothies in particular.

I think that we're in a lunch rut, as well. I kind of rotate quesadillas, scrambled eggs, mac n cheese, perogies, and chicken wraps every week. None of which seems to be packable for daycare.

Why don't you tell us what you usually pack so that we can get an idea of the types of things she can eat at daycare - that will help with new suggestions!

Let me see if I can remember this past week:

Monday: Cheese sandwich on whole wheat bread, applesauce cup, spinach pancake, honeydew melon

Tuesday: Chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, mixed veggies, YoKids yogurt, 1/2 banana, pretzels

Wednesday: Slice of pizza, applesauce cup, mixed veggies, honeydew melon, raisins

Thursday: mini bagel with crean cheese, veggie sausage pattie, orange wedges, honeydew melon, pretzel goldfish, raisins

Her daycare will warm food up in the microwave as needed. They provide a morning snack and an afternoon snack.

what about some mini quiches? Then you can make them ahead too...we bake them in silicone muffin cups. Will she eat eggs mixed with veggies or cheese?

Wow, will you come make lunch for me? I have a bagel and cup of soup every day!

What about a fairly dry pasta salad with veggies in it, or couscous with veggies or dried cranberries mixed in? Chicken/turkey sausage cut up in finger friendly chunks? Low-fat mini muffins made with lots of oats and fruit? Tortillas rolled with refried beans and shreaded cheese? Or other sandwiches rolled into a whole wheat tortilla and cut into pinwheel shapes?

Kate, you sure are going to be a good mom someday, all your ideas sound good to me!
How about hummus in a pita with some veggies? Sadie is worldly, I bet she would like it.
Love the picture of her with the beater, reminds me of when I was little!

Auntie Kara

Sadie does like hummus and pita...I could send the hummus in a little cup and the pita and veggies to dip in. Good idea!

Tortilla roll ups is a great idea! We have never done that and she would love it. She loves Mexican food, especially refried beans. And the little quiches...how cute. She would have fun making them in muffin cups.

One thing that I want to try is hard boiled eggs. She has never had one and if she liked them, that would be a nice easy protein thing to add. She loves eggs in general, so I bet she would like hard boiled.

Thanks Kara! :) I had just come from a meeting about whole grains so had whole grain + protein on my mind.

How about a bologna sandwich on white bread and a twinkie? That's classic lunch food. Only kidding. Sadie seems to be getting a good diet now with some nice new suggestions.

Ann,

you could make lunches really easy on yourself and have a routine. You know, Mondays = sandwich, Tuesdays = eggs, Wednesdays = pasta, etc. You could mix it up and send pasta salad one week on Wednesday and mac n cheese the next, or not.

It's pretty Waldorf (at Henry's little school every Tuesday is Oats Day and every Thursday is Rice Day), but they say that kids do love routines.
