Noodles!

Originally uploaded by Dan and Ann
Just like her big sister, Helena loves noodles. She is becoming more and more determined to feed herself and less and less wiling to let us spoon food into her mouth.

Even though she has only two teeth (bottom front) she can manage quite nicely with many kinds of food. She ate a good portion of a bagel for breakfast this morning and probably would have finished it if it hadn't been time to leave for daycare...she likes her bagels plain and straight from the freezer!

NH Maple Syrup Open House Weekend

Mmmmm....syrup.
Every year, there is a weekend at the end of March which is the Open House weekend for sugar houses. You can go visit and see the syrup boiling and have free samples. Last year, we found a great place, Little Stream Sugar Works, and we went back this year, bringing the Isaac family along.

It's in a residential neighborhood in West Lebanon...you would never believe there would be a sugarhouse, but there it is, right in the guy's backyard!
There's the sugarhouse!
And the syrup was delicious!

It was Helena's first time riding in the baby backpack. She loved it. She also loved the syrup...we only let her have a little taste.

Happy Birthday, Daddy! We all love you so much!
Happy Birthday Daddy!

We're looking forward to nice warm Spring weather and lots of fun plans for the spring, including a visit to Grandma and Grandpa, Jenny and Andy for early Passover, Passover with Isaac and Naomi's family, a visit to Nana and Bob Bob for Easter with the cousins and great-grandparents and Auntie Kara for Easter and lots more stuff too.

We were also very excited about the birth of a new friend on Tuesday. Welcome Liam Richard and congratulations to Kristin, Doug and big sister Riley!

Iditarod

Sadie's class theme for March is "Dogs" and one of the activities has been to follow the Iditarod. Each child picked a musher, choosing one whose name started with the same letter as their own. Sadie's musher was Sebastian Schnuelle, who ultimately finished second.

Today, as a conclusion to this unit, their teacher Jennie brought in her dog, Niki, and a dogsled. According to Sadie, Niki is a sled dog "who grew out of doing that and is now Jennie's pet but she pulls a sled for Jennie."

Sadie gets ready:

She wanted me to tape a race number on her jacket this morning:

Thank you Jennie for bringing in Niki. What a great experience!

Naomi and Isaac (and their mom and dad) came over for dinner tonight. It was cute to watch Nellie playing with her friend. As they get older, we hope they will get along as well as Sadie and Isaac do. They seem to enjoy each other's company already.

Nellie is feeling much better. She is cheerful and having fun. We're starting to see a little cruising around furniture...maybe she will be an early walker like Sadie (and Dan!).

(Our littler leprechaun has an ear infection and is staying home from school today so she's not dressed her St. Patrick's outfit).

Sadie and Art

Sadie paints
Originally uploaded by Dan and Ann
Sadie is taking a drawing class at her daycare right now and really enjoys it. One of her regular teachers is also a children's art teacher and is offering a class on Monday afternoons.

It's so interesting to see Sadie learning about drawing. Up until now, she has always liked to draw, but recently, she has been trying look closely and to draw what she sees and has also begun to practice drawing repeated designs and shapes. In the last few days, she produced an amazing picture of a flock of birds (inspired by some birds she saw on TV) and a great drawing of a sled dog (her class at school is studying the Iditarod).

Product Review

This is my first time reviewing a product because this was my first time I was given an item to try and then review on my blog! I was given a very nice set of MilkBank products. These are a new brand of bottles and storage containers for breastmilk. Since I'm working, I pump milk for Nellie and she drinks it the next day at daycare.

My favorite thing about the MilkBank products is the vacuum pump for the storage bottles. You put the milk into the bottle and then use a little pump to pump out the air. It's like one of the those vacu-vin wine savers, if you have ever used that. The milk stays fresher and there is a very satisfying pop sound when you open up the milk later on.

I also like that it's orange and white...fun looking! The one drawback is that you can't pump the milk directly into the MilkBank bottles. Thanks for letting me try this, citymama. I really like it and am using it a lot. I would buy this as a gift for any mom who I knew was going to pump.

Conversation with Sadie

Sadie: Mama, what's the gradypresson?
Mama: What? I don't know. Can you say it again?
Sadie: Gradypresson. Barack Obama said it on TV. On a commercial.
Mama (lightbulb finally going on): Oh, the Great Depression? It was a time a long time ago in America when a lot of people didn't have jobs so they didn't have money.
Sadie: When you was a little girl in New York?
Mama: No, a long time ago, before Grandma and Grandpa and Nana and Bob-Bob were born.
Sadie: Barack Obama said he was going to make some jobs.
Mama: Yes, people want to have jobs so they can have money to buy things for their families.
Sadie: It's like "Millions Mister"*.
Mama: Yes, that's exactly right.
Sadie: Mama, let's play that song right now.

*Song from the 1930s that's on the Dan Zanes album "Catch That Train"

[Dan Edit: I put a link to the song lyrics]

Two Nellies?

Sadie painted this life-size portrait of Nellie at AVA Open Art Studio last weekend. She was very accurate in the size of her painting...it is almost exactly the same size as baby sister.

Meeting Tinkerbell

Sadie and Tink
Originally uploaded by Dan and Ann
One of Sadie's favorite parts of our trip to Disneyworld was meeting Tinkerbell. We had to wait for nearly an hour, but it was worth it to meet Tink (and Iridessa and Silvermist). She wore her new Tinkerbell dress and the fairies all complimented her on how lovely she looked.

Sadie was totally thrilled and amazed. It's so fun with her at this age because she really believes in all of it.

Sadie and Nellie have been really having fun together these days. Sadie loves that Nellie is starting to stand up. She's been showing her how to play with the activity table and some other toys we brought up from the basement.

Doesn't Sadie look so tall in this picture? She is about double Helena's height. Yesterday, Dan took Sadie skiing for the first time. They had a great time...unfortunately, he did not bring a camera along. Next time!

Food?

Food
Originally uploaded by Dan and Ann
Helena was all excited when Sadie handed her this dish. It took her quite a while to realize there was no food in it.

She is very interested in all the fake food Sadie has in her play kitchen, especially a plastic bagel, a wooden banana and a plastic chocolate chip cookie that came from a counting game.

She loves to eat. In addition to gobbling down jars of baby food, yogurt, oatmeal and homemade puree, she is eating lots of table foods. At Disney, she plunged her hands into my bowl of spaghetti and helped herself!

We're back!

Family and Rafiki
Originally uploaded by Dan and Ann
We're back from Disneyworld. We had a great time. Thank you so much Grandpa and Grandma for the fun vacation.

Here, we are posing with Rafiki (from The Lion King) at Animal Kingdom. We also visited Epcot, The Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios. Sadie had the best time. Nellie was a good sport throughout, although she had no idea what was going on. We put a bunch of pictures of the trip on Flickr and will also share some more on the blog over the next few days.

Syrup and Snow

This weekend, Sadie was helping Dan shovel some snow. While she was outside, I asked her to fill a container with snow. Then, we poured maple syrup over it.

Sadie loved eating the "old fashioned ice cream".

Haircut

Sadie was looking a bit shaggy, so I took her for a haircut at Vivo, where I get my hair cut.
She was very excited to try the mommy salon and said it was "fancy". She was especially impressed by the bathroom and all the samples of soap and lotion they offer in there.

"Why you spraying my head?"

"I like this haircut...I look like Violet from the Incredibles!"

"I love it!"

It came out cute. In retrospect, we could have gone even shorter, but for $6, we can easily go back!
