Apple Not Picking

Many of the orchards in our area are not having pick-your-own apples this fall due to an unusual climate pattern in the spring. Very warm days before warm weather usually comes led the trees to bud and blossom early and a hard frost that came after frosts are usually over, destroyed most of the crop. They were literally "nipped in the bud". Our favorite orchard, Poverty Lane, was hit very hard and they don't have enough of crop to let people pick.

We went up this past weekend and it was bizarre to see the trees practically bare of fruit. There were apples in the farm stand, but all the trees where they usually allow picking were bare.

Since they know people like to go into the orchards, they set up an informational walk, which we took and very much enjoyed.

After the walk, we had to support the farm stand, so we bought some mini pumpkins, mums and a bag of delicious apples.

Reading to Little Sister

One truly excellent thing about Sadie knowing how to read is that she will read to Helena and Helena loves it. We love watching/listening to it.

Here, Sadie is reading from the Random House Book of Easy to Read Stories, a cute anthology I found among my books at work and decided to bring home. She really enjoys that it's a big book that she can read herself.

Kindergarten Soccer

Sadie started Kindergarten soccer yesterday. She had a lot of fun.

She was issued a "jersey" when she arrived and we ducked behind a tree to switch into the new top. Paired with her new shin guards, new purple soccer socks and red shorts, she was ready to go:

Excursion

For months now, Sadie has been asking to ride the bus. There is a public bus stop at the bottom of our street and she has always been interested in where the bus goes and if she could ride it. So today, we took the bus.

Waiting for the bus:

We rode the bus into Hanover and walked around for a bit:

Then back on the bus to visit Dan at the lab and finally we took the bus home. It was actually really fun. Good idea, Sadie!

Butterflies!

Grandma got Sadie a kit to hatch butterflies and it was really fun to watch the caterpillars form chrysalids and eventually hatch into butterflies. All five of them hatched!
Butterfly Release

After a few days of observing the butterflies, it was time to release them.

There one goes!

Thanks for the great idea and the kit, Grandma. We had a lot of fun with this project.

Summer Reading

A few weeks ago, Sadie signed up for the summer reading program at the Lebanon Library.

She carefully wrote down her name and was given a reading log to record what she has read.

If she completes the log by the middle of August, she will receive a little toy, a choice of book and a coupon for a free ice cream cone.

The reading program kicked off with special visit from children's author and illustrator DB Johnson, who we just love.

Big Grampy

Dan's grandfather, Grampy, or Big Grampy as Sadie called him, passed away last night. We will all miss him.

He was a wonderful husband, a loving father of four children, grandfather of nine grandchildren and very proud great-grandfather to Sadie and Helena and to his great-grandchild-to-be, Kara and Kyle's baby on the way.

We love you and miss you, Grampy.
